Bulbapedia is generally a good choice for most hunts, but sometimes the hunt isn't about Pokémon or a change of strategy might be a good move. In these cases, search engines like Google are your best friend. Search engines are a powerful tool that can find a myriad of possibly helpful sources to aid in your Scavenging conquest. However, the amount of search results may be overwhelming, and it becomes difficult to tell which ones are helpful. It's useful then to learn some tricks to narrow down your search.
The obvious solution is just to search the entire question. In most cases, this won't yield anything useful, but it is a good place to start. Remove words that probably won't be part of the source that the question was based off of or don't add meaning to the search, such as "this [x]," articles, or prepositions. For example, the Bulbapedia article for a question asking about "this move" used in some anime episode is probably not going to mention the words "this" or "move" to any useful degree. Sometimes, search engines will be able to find results with words that are close enough to the original search, as questions tend to reword parts of the original source to form the question. If you're lucky, the first result might be what you want, and you can continue with the hunt. Otherwise, keep reading.
One of the more powerful search tricks is using quotes in your searches. If you know for a fact that a certain word or phrase will be helpful to finding the answer, surround it with quotes in your search ("like so"; this is the only time I am using quotes to demonstrate how to search, treat quotes as you would normally from here on). Results must contain the words in quotes exactly, which is a great help in pinpointing the answer. However, if the original source is even a little off in its wording, it will not show up in the results. In this case, it's helpful to try variations of the words in quotes, or you can combine them with "OR" to try multiple things at the same time. Maybe instead of "gains experience in battle," you should be looking for "gains experience during battle." In any case, be careful when narrowing your search down too much, as you could be preventing the answer from showing up.
What if you just want to search the results of a specific site? Sites like Bulbapedia have their own search engines, but a lot of sites don't have a dedicated search engine or don't have great search functionality, like Fandom. Obviously, you could just put the name of the website in the search, but this method isn't great if you want to search within specific subpages. "site:[url]" is the perfect tool here: it returns only results from pages that can be found on that specific url. For instance, if I wanted to search the Pokémon GO Wiki, I would start my search with "site:https://pokemongo.fandom.com/wiki/" and continue from there.
If you have to go to the ̶d̶a̶r̶k̶ ̶w̶e̶b̶ second page of searches, you should consider excluding results that are most likely unhelpful. This is where "-[x]" (a minus sign) comes in. Put a minus sign in front of a word (if you want to do a phrase, put it in quotes and then put the minus sign in front) to exclude all mentions of that word from the results. For instance, if I wanted information about Horntail in MapleStory but I kept getting results about actual wasps, I could add "-wasp" to my search.
As for narrowing down what pages contain helpful information, it really depends on the question. Most hunts in Scavengers are based on information that is findable on wikis, so those sites should be the first places to check. You can always skim through the first few results to see if they contain any useful information. If search engines still aren't getting you anywhere, try changing your thought process with a completely different search or try a different approach entirely.
There are other advanced search tricks that could be helpful on occasion, so feel free to use the tricks you learned here to search for them yourself. With experience, you should build up an intuition of how to search and what to look for, but hopefully these tips and tricks will be a good starting point in your Scavenging journey.
